| Breed Survey | Critique of German Shepherd which must be passed before the dog is certified for breeding. Prior to a breed survey, the dog must pass a BH (temperament test), AD (endurance test), courage test, obtain a satisfactory conformation evaluation, pass a SchH1 test and be certified free from hip dysplasia. |

| GSDCA-WDA | German Shepherd Dog Club of America - Working Dog Association. |
| HD | Hip dysplasia - Hip abnormality which can affect many large breed dogs including German Shepherds. Breeding dogs should be certified to be free from hip dysplasia by the OFA or the German "a" stamp. |
| KKL1 (Koerklasse 1) | Highest breed survey rating - Especially recommended for breeding. |
| KKL2 (Koerklasse 2) | Suitable for breeding. Dog may have a structural or protection work fault which could be compensated for by bloodlines or working qualities. |
| OFA | Orthopedic Foundation for Animals. United States organization which examines x-rays and certifies dogs to be free from hip dysplasia. Either this certification or the German "a" stamp should be found on every dog in your puppy's pedigree to reduce the chances of hip dysplasia developing. |
| SchH | Schutzhund (protection dog) title. Dogs must pass tests in obedience, protection work and tracking. SchH title demonstrates courage, strong nerves, stable temperament, intelligence, obedience and working ability. Necessary to obtain a breed survey. |
| Sieger Show | National Championship show for German Shepherds. |
| SG (Sehr Gut) | Very good rating - highest available show rating for an untitled dog. |
| SV | Verein für Deutsche Schäferhunde e. V. German Shepherd Dog registry based in Germany. |
| UScA or USA | United Schutzhund Clubs of America. |
| V (Vorzüglich) | Excellent rating - highest available rating for titled dogs unless at a Sieger show. |
| VA (Vorzüglich Auslese) | Excellent Select rating - Highest possible show rating. Only awarded at the Sieger Show. |
