Choosing the breeder of your new puppy is probably the most important decision that you will make in your search for a new dog. A good breeder will ask questions to make sure that a German Shepherd puppy is right for you, they will assist you in choosing the right pup, they will provide information about how to raise the pup and they will provide support throughout the lifetime of your pup should any questions or problems ever arise. They also are responsible for the first 8 weeks of your puppy's life and play an important role in shaping your puppy's personality, as well as selecting the right breeding match to ensure that your puppy has the best possible genetics, health, care and socialization to provide it with a good start in life.
The following are some questions that we suggest you ask potential breeders, as well as what we feel appropriate answers should be:
How long have you been breeding German Shepherds?
While there are no magic numbers, there are some things that only experience can provide and a more experienced breeder is more likely to have the knowledge to select appropriate breeding pairs, assist you in choosing the right puppy and will be more likely to still be breeding in the future if you need to come back to them for advice and support.
Do you train and show your dogs?
Whether you are buying with a future show or Schutzhund career in mind, or buying a lifelong family pet, a reputable breeder will be actively engaged in showing their dogs. There are far too many unwanted dogs in the world to breed solely for the sake of breeding. Breeding should be done to improve the breed and the purpose of shows and Schutzhund competitions is to select the dogs which have the desired characteristics.
